§01

Identification

Small (~2.3 mm), monomorphic, uniformly reddish-tan with dense pubescence that gives the body a fuzzy or matte appearance under magnification. Long legs and antennae with a 12-segmented antenna and no club. Erratic, fast 'crazy' running pattern with no clear trail discipline, workers run in every direction. Crushed workers do not produce a foul odor (separating them from odorous house ant).

Biology & Colony Structure

Supercolonial, unrelated colonies do not fight, so populations are functionally continuous across many acres. Polygyne with hundreds of queens per nest area. Reproduces almost entirely by budding; no mating flights in the U.S. Densities can exceed 100 million ants per acre in established areas, Texas A&M reports workers piled inches deep around foundations and electrical equipment in late summer.

Pest Status & Significance

Shorts out air conditioners, breaker boxes, pump controllers, traffic signals, and well pumps because workers aggregate inside warm electrical enclosures. Displaces red imported fire ant in invaded zones, eliminating one problem and replacing it with a worse one ecologically. Reduces ground-nesting bird and arthropod populations. Sheer worker volume drives homeowners out of yards and onto porches.

Tawny Crazy Ant Control Strategy

Texas A&M's protocol uses a non-repellent contact insecticide as a wide perimeter band (up to 10 ft out from the structure) reapplied on a regulated 90-day cycle by a licensed applicator, baits alone almost never give adequate control because the colony is too large to consume a meaningful fraction. Combine with habitat reduction (clear leaf litter, debris, landscape timbers, and ground cover where colonies harbor). For electrical equipment, deltamethrin or bifenthrin dust inside the enclosure with all power off, plus a perimeter spray around the box.

Non-Chemical & Cultural Control

Remove leaf litter, mulch piles deeper than 2 in within 10 ft of the foundation, stacked landscape timbers, and decorative rock with voids. Seal electrical enclosures, weep holes, and utility penetrations. Manage honeydew-producing aphids and scale on landscape plants, sap is the primary energy source for established colonies.

Pitfalls, Do Not Do This

Do not rely on conventional fire-ant bait, colonies are too large, and tawny crazy ants are mediocre bait responders. Do not assume one treatment ends it, re-invasion from neighboring property is constant; this is a managed, not an eliminated, pest.
