Baiting
guide.

Bait selection is a food question before it is a chemistry question. The matrix decides whether the colony eats, the active decides what happens after. Get the order wrong and you will blame the product for a placement error.

Run a preference test first

Set the card

Place small dabs of sugar gel, protein gel, and an oil-based bait side by side on foil or an index card near the trail.

Watch 20 minutes

Recruitment, not first contact, is the signal. Look for a sustained line, not a single curious forager.

Commit and scale

Deploy the winning matrix across multiple small placements. Re-test when the season or the trail behavior changes.

Bait matrix selection

Sugar / carbohydrate
Gel, liquid, liquid station
When to use

Default for most indoor trailing species and for spring and late-season foraging.

Liquid sugar baits mirror honeydew, which is what most of these species are already collecting outdoors.

Typical responders

Odorous house ant, Argentine ant, ghost ant, white-footed ant, acrobat ant, pavement ant

Protein
Gel, granular, solid
When to use

Brood-rearing periods and species with strong protein demand; often the second half of a preference test.

Protein demand rises when the colony is producing brood, which is why preference shifts through the season.

Typical responders

Pharaoh ant, thief ant, carpenter ant, fire ant, little black ant

Oil / lipid
Granular broadcast, solid, seed-based
When to use

Outdoor and turf programs, and species that harvest oily seeds.

Oil-based granular bait is the backbone of fire ant broadcast work and is also the most perishable matrix on the truck.

Typical responders

Red imported fire ant, harvester ant, thief ant, rover ant

Seasonal shift
Preference is not a fixed species trait. Colonies pull carbohydrate to fuel foragers and protein to feed brood, so the same species can reject on Monday what it accepted in April. Re-test rather than assume.

Placement

Do
  • Place many small placements rather than one large glob. Recruitment scales with contact points.
  • Place adjacent to the trail, not directly on it, so foragers are not swimming through product.
  • Place at harborage edges: under sinks, behind appliances, along slab joints, at bed edges outdoors.
  • Keep stations shaded, out of irrigation spray, and off surfaces that will be cleaned.
  • Label placements and record consumption per placement on every visit.
Do not
  • Do not clean or spray the trail before baiting. The trail is your delivery route.
  • Do not overlay bait onto a treated residual band.
  • Do not place bait where children, pets, or food-contact surfaces are exposed. Use enclosed stations.
  • Do not judge the program at 48 hours, especially with growth regulator baits.
  • Do not re-treat by adding product volume when the real problem is matrix or access.
§04

Common failures, and what they actually mean

Bait untouched, ants still trailing
Access or repellency, not rejection.
Check for a residual spray, cleaner, or essential-oil product between the colony and the placement. Move placements adjacent to the trail and remove the repellent barrier.
Strong uptake for two days, then nothing
Bait dried out, oxidized, or was consumed faster than it was replenished.
Replenish gels before they skin over, rotate granular stock, and keep stations out of direct sun and irrigation spray.
Ants prefer the crumbs on the counter
Competing food source outcompeting the matrix.
Sanitation is a treatment step. Remove the competition, then re-place.
Trail volume drops, then rebounds in two weeks
Foragers killed, colony untouched. Classic contact-spray outcome.
Stop contact applications in the bait zone and switch to a slow-acting bait that survives long enough to be shared.
One infestation becomes several
Budding triggered by spray pressure, typical of Pharaoh ants.
Bait only. No repellent products anywhere in the structure until the program is complete.
Fire ant broadcast produced no visible change at 48 hours
Expectation error. IGR baits act on colony demographics, not knockdown.
Wait the labeled interval, then treat the remaining mounds in high-contact zones as step two.
Bait consumed heavily, colony persists
Active too fast, killing foragers before the bait is distributed, or the colony is a supercolony far larger than the placement density assumed.
Move to a slower active and increase the number of placements rather than the size of each one.
