Glossary.

The vocabulary used across the species dossiers and the control playbook, defined the way it is used in the field rather than the way it is used in a taxonomy key. 30 terms.

Active ingredient

The chemical in a product that produces the pesticidal effect. Programs should be planned around actives and their mode of action, not around brand names, because labels and formulations change.

Alate

A winged reproductive ant, male or female, produced for a mating flight. Indoor alates in numbers usually mean a nest inside the structure, not a wandering forager.

Bait matrix

The food carrier that delivers the active ingredient: sugar, protein, or oil based, in gel, liquid, granular, or solid form. Matrix choice drives acceptance more than active choice does.

Budding

Colony reproduction in which a queen and a group of workers and brood split off and start a new nest nearby. Repellent sprays can trigger budding in Pharaoh ants and some other species, turning one problem into several.

Callow

A newly emerged adult worker, typically pale and soft. Large numbers of callows in a nest indicate active, healthy brood production.

Carton nest

A nest built of chewed plant material, soil, and secretions, typical of some acrobat and arboreal ants.

Contact insecticide

A product that kills on direct contact or brief exposure to a treated surface. Fast, visible, and frequently counterproductive when baiting is the primary strategy.

Drench

A liquid application poured over and around a mound so it penetrates the gallery system, used for individual fire ant mound treatment.

Exclusion

Physical sealing of entry points: caulking penetrations, screening vents, adjusting door sweeps, and closing gaps at the sill line. Best performed after colony pressure is reduced.

Forager

A worker collecting food outside the nest. Foragers are typically a small fraction of the colony, which is why killing visible ants rarely resolves an infestation.

Frass

Debris expelled from galleries. Carpenter ant frass is coarse shavings mixed with insect parts, distinguishable from the pellets of drywood termites.

Gaster

The bulbous rear section of the ant abdomen behind the petiole. Gaster shape, color, and hair patterns are routine identification characters.

Honeydew

Sugar-rich excretion from aphids, scale, and mealybugs. Many pest ants tend and defend honeydew producers, which is why plant pest management is part of ant control.

IGR

Insect growth regulator. A class of actives that disrupts development and reproduction rather than killing workers outright. Slow, colony-level, and central to fire ant broadcast baiting.

IPM

Integrated pest management. A decision framework combining inspection, identification, habitat and sanitation correction, exclusion, and targeted treatment, with monitoring to verify the result.

Monogyne

A colony with a single functional queen. Monogyne fire ant populations are territorial and produce far fewer mounds per acre than polygyne populations.

Non-repellent

A product ants cannot detect and therefore walk through and carry back on their bodies. Non-repellent chemistry is generally compatible with a colony-elimination strategy; repellent chemistry generally is not.

Palatability

How readily ants accept and consume a bait. Degraded oil, dried gel, contamination with cleaners or repellents, and competing food all reduce palatability.

Parent nest

The primary nest holding the queen and the youngest brood, usually in moist wood or soil outdoors for carpenter ants. Eliminating it is the objective of the treatment.

Petiole

The narrow waist segment or segments between the thorax and gaster. One node versus two is one of the fastest field separations in ant identification.

Pheromone trail

The chemical path foragers lay to recruit nestmates to a food source. A trail is a delivery route for bait and should not be cleaned or sprayed before treatment.

Polygyne

A colony with multiple functional queens. Polygyne populations are non-territorial, reach much higher densities, and are harder to suppress.

Polymorphic

Having workers of multiple sizes within one colony, as in fire ants and carpenter ants. Size range within a single trail is itself a diagnostic clue.

Propodeal spines

Paired spines on the rear upper thorax, present in some genera such as Crematogaster and Pogonomyrmex, absent in others. A reliable, quick character under a hand lens.

Satellite nest

A secondary nest of workers, older brood, and sometimes winged reproductives, without the egg-laying queen. Common in carpenter ants, and the reason interior treatment alone fails.

Supercolony

An extended network of interconnected, non-aggressive nests treated as a single population, characteristic of Argentine and tawny crazy ants. Property-line thinking fails against supercolonies.

Trophallaxis

Mouth-to-mouth food sharing between colony members. This is the mechanism that carries a slow-acting bait from a forager to the brood and the queen.

Trophobiosis

The mutualism between ants and honeydew-producing insects, where ants gain sugar and the plant pests gain protection.

Two-step method

The standard fire ant program for turf: broadcast bait across the area first, then treat remaining individual mounds in high-contact zones after the bait has worked.

Void injection

Application of dust or foam directly into a wall void, gallery, or cavity where a nest is located. The highest-value treatment in carpenter ant work when the nest is found.
