A working integrated pest management playbook: identify, inspect, correct conducive conditions, exclude, bait rather than spray, and verify with monitoring. Written for the sequence field work actually follows, including the reason a residual spray quietly destroys a baiting program.

§01

Identify before you treat

Species determines strategy. Nothing else in this playbook works if this step is skipped.

A Pharaoh ant job and a carpenter ant job share almost no tactics. One is a budding indoor species where a repellent spray multiplies the problem; the other is a moisture-driven wood excavator where the answer is often a plumbing repair and a void injection. Guessing costs the whole program.

Work the standard characters in order: body size and whether the workers are polymorphic, number of petiole nodes, antennal segments and club, thorax profile, presence of propodeal spines, odor when crushed, nest location, and swarm timing.

  • ·Collect specimens in alcohol rather than tape when the call is ambiguous.
  • ·Note whether workers in one trail are all the same size or a mixed range.
  • ·Record where the trail leaves the structure, not just where you first saw it.

Inspection

The inspection is the job. Treatment is the paperwork on the end of it.

Inspect interior and exterior on every ant call, even when the complaint is a single kitchen trail. Nearly every recurring indoor complaint is an exterior colony with a convenient bridge into the building.

Moisture mapping matters more than most technicians expect. Wet sill plates, condensate lines, roof valleys, tub surrounds, and chronically irrigated foundation soil are the conditions that turn an outdoor species into a structural one.

  • ·Meter moisture around windows, doors, sills, tubs, and deck ledgers.
  • ·Check honeydew producers on plantings within reach of the wall.
  • ·Photograph conducive conditions for the report; they are the justification for the corrective work.
§03

Sanitation and moisture

Bait competes with whatever else is available. Reduce the competition.

An open pet food bin, a leaking supply line, or a recycling bin of rinsed-but-sticky cans will out-compete any bait on the market. Correcting food and water is not optional housekeeping advice, it is a treatment step with measurable effect on bait uptake.

  • ·Repair leaks and improve crawl space and attic ventilation.
  • ·Empty and clean recycling and refuse containers on a schedule.
  • ·Correct grading and irrigation that keep foundation soil wet.
§04

Exclusion

Seal after control, not before it.

Exclusion is durable and cheap, but the sequencing is what technicians get wrong. Sealing an active entry while a colony is feeding on interior resources reroutes the trail into a wall void you cannot inspect. Reduce the colony first, then close the building.

  • ·Caulk utility penetrations, weep hole gaps, and sill-line cracks.
  • ·Fit door sweeps and repair damaged screens and vents.
  • ·Trim vegetation off the roof and siding, pull mulch back from the foundation.
  • ·Lift and relocate firewood and stored material away from walls.

Baiting versus spraying

Bait reaches the queen. Spray reaches the ants you can already see.

Colonies are mostly brood and reproductives that never leave the nest. Foragers are a small, replaceable fraction. A slow-acting bait carried back through trophallaxis is the only common tool that reaches the part of the colony that matters.

Contact sprays produce a fast, visible result on the wrong target. They kill foragers, which is the audience you needed to recruit, and they leave a treated surface that can repel the survivors away from your placements.

Why spraying breaks baiting

This is the single most common self-inflicted failure in ant work.

A repellent residual laid between a colony and a bait station is a wall. Ants detect the deposit, reroute, and your untouched station reads as a bait rejection when it is actually an access problem. Cleaners, aerosols, and essential-oil products applied by the occupant do the same thing.

Worse, in Pharaoh ants and some Tapinoma populations, spray pressure triggers budding: the colony splits and relocates into multiple satellite nests, converting one treatable infestation into several hidden ones.

If residual chemistry is used at all, keep it non-repellent, keep it targeted, and never overlay it onto bait placements or the routes leading to them.

  • ·Do not spray an active trail you intend to bait.
  • ·Do not clean the trail before the bait is placed.
  • ·Tell the occupant, in writing, to stop applying store-bought sprays.
  • ·Keep bait placements at least outside any treated band.
⚠ Field rule
If you bait it, do not spray it. If you spray it, do not expect the bait to work. Pick one strategy per zone and keep the boundary between them physical and documented.

Monitoring and follow-up

Judge the program on trend, not on the first 48 hours.

Bait consumption should decline gradually as the colony saturates. Consumption that stops abruptly while ants are still trailing means the matrix is wrong, the product degraded, or a competing food source appeared. Consumption that rises at one exterior station is early warning of a growing colony at that corner of the property.

Set a reinspection at 7 to 10 days for interior work, 30 days for carpenter ant work, and 4 to 6 weeks for turf fire ant programs. Document mound counts, station consumption, and frass at fixed reference points so the next visit compares against a number rather than a memory.
