This portfolio leans on three classes of source: U.S. university extension programs (Texas A&M AgriLife, University of Florida IFAS, Penn State, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, California IPM), federal entomology and regulatory bodies (USDA APHIS, USDA ARS, USDA Forest Service, CDC), and state agencies (Texas Parks & Wildlife for horned-lizard context). It deliberately avoids commercial pest-control company blog posts as primary references, because those tend to be tuned for SEO conversion rather than diagnostic accuracy.

In several cases the common name used by extension literature applies at the genus or species-complex level rather than a single species. The profile notes that limitation rather than pretending the boundary is crisper than it is.

How to use the profiles

Reliable field-level ant identification does not depend on color. Extension sources consistently emphasise a combination of characters: body size, number of petiole nodes, antennal segmentation and club, thorax profile, presence or absence of propodeal spines, odor when crushed, nesting site, and swarm timing. The species dossiers structure information in that order, so you can use them as a working key rather than a brochure.

Practical tip
Pharaoh ants and thief ants are both tiny and yellowish. Odorous house ants and Argentine ants both trail heavily indoors. Large field ants are routinely mistaken for carpenter ants by homeowners. The Key Distinctions page exists specifically because those confusions cost service hours.

Interpretation notes

Not every entry on this list is documented at equal depth by every source. Some species are strongly species-specific in the literature; others are treated under a genus, complex, or practical pest category. That unevenness is normal in applied entomology. A long-form portfolio is more useful when it preserves those limits than when it papers over them with confident generalisations.

Active ingredients and product names appear because licensed PMPs work in those terms, not because any single product is endorsed. Labels change, state registrations vary, and the chemistry of an active ingredient (its mode of action, residual, foraging-compatibility) is what actually drives outcome. Treat the bait tables as a starting set, not a buying list.

Scope

Taken together, the 21 species cover most of what matters in U.S. structural, nuisance, and outdoor applied entomology: tiny indoor budding ants, large moisture-associated wood nesters, urban pavement and trailing invaders, invasive supercolony ants, and conspicuous outdoor mound builders. Species that are taxonomically interesting but rarely encountered in service work are intentionally excluded.
