§01

Identification

Among the largest ants encountered indoors, majors reach 13 mm. Single petiole node, evenly rounded thorax in profile (no spines or dips), and a circle of hairs at the tip of the gaster. Sawdust-like 'frass' beneath voids, a mixture of wood shavings, dead insect parts, and brood casings, is diagnostic and distinguishes carpenter ant galleries from termite damage (termite galleries are mud-packed; carpenter galleries are smooth and clean).

Biology & Colony Structure

Parent colonies require 3–6 years to mature and produce 10,000–15,000 workers plus winged reproductives. Once mature they generate satellite colonies, workers and older brood, but no queen, which is what is typically found indoors. Swarmers fly in spring (April–June in the north, earlier south); winged ants emerging indoors in winter or early spring are diagnostic of a colony living inside the structure, not just foraging in. Foraging is largely nocturnal; workers travel up to 100 yd from the nest along trails on sill plates, utility lines, and tree branches touching the roof.

Pest Status & Significance

Excavates structural wood to expand galleries, weakening framing, sills, joists, window and door frames, and roof decking, particularly where leaks, condensation, or vapor problems have softened the wood. Damage accumulates over years and is often discovered only after significant structural repair is needed. A carpenter ant find is also a moisture-problem find: the underlying water entry must be corrected or the ants return.

Carpenter Ant Control Strategy

Find the nest. Inspect at night with a flashlight along trails, tap suspect wood for the hollow sound and listen for the rustling response of disturbed majors, and examine likely moisture sites (chimney flashing, roof valleys, deck ledger boards, window headers, plumbing chases). Treat the galleries directly with a residual dust injected into voids, this is the single most effective intervention. Supplement with non-repellent perimeter spray and a slow-acting bait to catch foragers from undiscovered satellite nests, and correct the moisture defect.

Non-Chemical & Cultural Control

Repair the moisture source, leaking roof valley, failed chimney flashing, clogged gutter, plumbing leak, ground-contact siding, deck ledger flashing. Replace softened wood. Cut tree branches at least 6 ft from the roof and remove ivy and dense shrubs from the foundation. Store firewood off the ground and at least 20 ft from the structure. These steps determine whether treatment holds.

Pitfalls, Do Not Do This

Do not surface-spray a foraging trail and stop there, the satellite nest is the smoke, not the fire. Do not assume frass equals termites or vice versa. Do not bait alone when the void is accessible; dusting the gallery is faster and more reliable.
