Acrobat Ant

Crematogaster spp.
Specimen Plate006
Acrobat Ant (Crematogaster spp.)
Lat. view
~2.5–4 mm; light brown to black

A medium-small ant recognized by raising its heart-shaped gaster overhead when alarmed; commonly occupies abandoned carpenter ant or termite galleries and is therefore a useful indicator of pre-existing wood damage.

Worker
~2.5–4 mm
Sting
Can sting weakly
Habitat
Decayed wood
Diet
Honeydew
Range
Across the United States
§01

Identification

Heart- or valentine-shaped gaster visible in dorsal view, diagnostic. Two petiole nodes attach to the top of the gaster rather than the front, allowing workers to flip the abdomen forward over the body when disturbed. Spines on the rear of the thorax. Color varies from light tan to nearly black depending on species.

§02

Biology & Colony Structure

Colonies are moderate (several thousand workers) with a single queen and short, well-defined trails. Often nests in pre-existing voids, old carpenter ant galleries, abandoned termite work, water-damaged wood, foam insulation board, and behind aluminum siding where condensation has degraded sheathing. Tends honeydew-producing aphids and scale insects heavily and will trail tens of meters into tree canopies.

§03

Pest Status & Significance

Indicator pest, when found indoors, almost always reveals a moisture-damaged or already-excavated structural void. Damage is excavation of soft wood and foam, not consumption. Stripping wires of insulation has been documented around exterior junction boxes.

§04

Acrobat Ant Control Strategy

Inspect for the source of the soft wood or foam void and correct it. Treat the active gallery directly with dust through a small access hole, then bait outdoor trails. Manage honeydew-producing landscape pests near the structure or the colony returns from canopy populations.

§05

Recommended Baits & Active Ingredients

Product names are representative of the active-ingredient class and intended for licensed PMPs. Always read and follow the label; rates, sites, and restrictions vary by formulation and state registration.

ProductActiveFormUse
Advance 375AAbamectin B1 0.011%GranularBroadcast around foundation and into landscape beds.
Maxforce Carpenter Ant Bait GelFipronil 0.001%GelPlace along active trails; acrobat ants accept the same matrix as Camponotus.
Terro PCOBorax 5.4%LiquidSweet liquid bait, acrobat ants are strong honeydew feeders and accept sucrose readily.
Drione DustPyrethrins + SilicaDustInject into the occupied void via small access drill or existing crack.
§06

Non-Chemical & Cultural Control

Replace water-damaged wood and foam insulation; correct the moisture source. Trim tree branches off the structure to break canopy access. Seal cracks in siding and trim.
§07

Pitfalls, Do Not Do This

⚠ Caution
Treating only the indoor trail leaves the void intact and the moisture source unaddressed. Spraying the gallery surface without dusting inside it drives ants deeper into the cavity.
