Thief Ant (Solenopsis molesta complex)

Extremely tiny pale yellow ants that nest beside larger ant colonies and raid their brood; routinely confused with Pharaoh ant but distinguished by a 2-segmented antennal club and a stronger preference for greasy/protein baits.

§01

Identification

Tiny (~1.5 mm), pale yellow, two petiole nodes, and a 10-segmented antenna with a 2-segmented club (Pharaoh ant has 12-segmented antenna with a 3-segmented club, the key separator). Visible stinger. Trails are slim and often follow electrical lines or plumbing.

§02

Biology & Colony Structure

Polygyne colonies of many queens and several thousand workers. Cleptobiotic, nests adjacent to other ant colonies and steals brood and prey. Tiny size allows entry into sealed food packaging that excludes other ants.

§03

Pest Status & Significance

Invades sealed foods, particularly greasy, oily, and protein-rich products (peanut butter, meats, cheeses, pet food). Common in pantries, walls, and around plumbing. Less infamous than Pharaoh ant but presents the same indoor-budding challenge.

§04

Thief Ant Control Strategy

Confirm ID with a hand lens, the bait strategy differs from Pharaoh ant. Lead with greasy/protein gels rather than sweets. Avoid repellent sprays. Treat throughout the structure rather than only at observed trails.

§05

Recommended Baits & Active Ingredients

Product names are representative of the active-ingredient class and intended for licensed PMPs. Always read and follow the label; rates, sites, and restrictions vary by formulation and state registration.

§06

Non-Chemical & Cultural Control

Refrigerate or seal greasy, oily, and protein-rich pantry items. Caulk wire and plumbing penetrations. Treat adjacent landscaping where larger 'host' ant colonies live.
§07

Pitfalls, Do Not Do This

⚠ Caution
Treating thief ants as if they were Pharaoh ants (sweet bait only), protein baits perform better. Pyrethroid sprays cause budding.
