Identification
Small reddish-brown ant with a distinct conical 'pyramid' of soil over the nest entrance (the namesake feature). Single petiole node, propodeum (rear thorax) bears a small upward-pointing tooth, diagnostic with a hand lens. Fast erratic running pattern.
Biology & Colony Structure
Single-queen colonies of a few hundred to a few thousand workers. Nests preferentially in disturbed, sunny, sandy soil and is often the dominant ant in turf gaps left after fire ant suppression. Known predator of fire ant queens, attacking newly mated alates as they land.
Pest Status & Significance
Mostly cosmetic, mounds in turf and sidewalk cracks. Rarely enters structures. Generally considered beneficial in fire-ant landscapes.
Pyramid Ant Control Strategy
Tolerate where possible, they suppress fire ant founders. Where control is required, broadcast standard fire-ant baits, which pyramid ants readily accept.
